New Delhi (SunstarTV Bureau): The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Wednesday sent a final notice to Twitter, of being taken a strong stand against handles posting content with offensive hashtags related to farmer genocide, else cases will be registered against the platform.
According to Centre notice, “hashtags like #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocid containing campaign to abuse, inflame and create tension in society on unsubstantiated grounds.”
The notice said, “The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has passed an interim order dated 31.01.2021 as a matter of emergency blocking 257 URLs and 1 hashtag under section 69 A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.”
“Incitement to genocide is not a freedom of speech. It is a threat to law and order,” the official statement said.
Warning against a penal action, the official statement said, “Twitter is an intermediary and they are obliged to obey the direction of the government. Refusal to do so will invite penal action.”
“Twitter cannot assume the role of court and justify non-compliance. Twitter may face penal action for not complying with government orders” the statement further said.
