SunStarTV(bureau): In the global market India occupies second position in production of fruits and vegetables, following China.
Being hit by the pandemic, the market value of essential goods has hiked enormously. This is the consequence of lack of production during the harvesting period- January to March. To meet the demand of whole-sellers and earn a modest amount of profit, resellers are selling vegetables with a double price.
The unseasonal excessive rain during the harvesting period of onion in October have aided to the decrease in production in states like like Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Bhuvesh Agrawal, vice president of the Cold Store Association in Agra, Uttar Pradesh has said ,“ The collective volume of potato is at all time low in 2020 ” .
Despite the supply of potatoes from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab in November December, wholesale prices are unlikely to fall below Rs 25 per Kg. By February prices are expected fall to Rs15 per Kg with the onset of the new crop in market.
This signifies the continuation of high price of vegetables for the next few months.
