Earlier in August, the Railways had cancelled the tender for the manufacturing of the 44 rakes of Train 18, which has been re-christened as Vande Bharat Express.
The move came after the Chinese joint venture company CRRC Pioneer Electric (India) Private Limited emerged as the only foreign bidder among the six contenders for manufacturing the semi-high speed trains. In September, the tender was floated again.
The move is expected to boost the ‘Make In India’ mission as for the first time as the tender constitutes the required minimum 75% local content of the total value. The procurement includes 5 years comprehensive annual maintenance contract with the supplier.
The specifications were prepared after multiple deliberations with industry at various levels for manufacturing the train sets indigenously. This is expected to give a boost to “AtmaNirbhar Bharat” mission.
Notably, Vande Bharat is a semi-high speed train. The Integral Coach Factory manufactured the first two Vande Bharat trains. The trains run on two routes – Varanasi and New Delhi, New Delhi and Katra.
