Kolkata (SunstarTV Bureau): Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has won the Bhabanipur bypoll by 58,832 votes from BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal.
TMC chief defeated her main rival Priyanka Tiberwal by a record margin of over 58k votes after the final 21 rounds of counting.
Mamata Banerjee, who lost the assembly elections to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari after she challenged him in Nandigram, sought re-election from Bhabanipur to retain her chief ministership in Bengal.
As Bhabanipur voted on Thursday, the Kolkata seat registered 57% voter turnout amid tension between the TMC and BJP camps.
Mamata Banerjee is pitted against BJP’s Priyanka Tibrewal and CPIM’s Srijib Biswas in the Bhabanipur bypoll. Meanwhile, bypolls were held in Murshidabad’s Samserganj and Jangipur seats as well that recorded a high voter turnout of over 77% each.
