New Delhi (SunstarTV Bureau): Bharti Airtel on Thursday made a big announcement on 5G service. It has become the country’s first telecom operator to successfully demonstrate live fifth-generation (5G) service over a commercial network in Hyderabad city.
Airtel 5G is capable of delivering 10x speeds, 10x latency and 100x concurrency when compared to existing technologies. Specifically, in Hyderabad, users were able to download a full-length movie in a matter of seconds on a 5G phone.
Meanwhile, Airtel made it clear that the live test was on a limited commercial network and would not be available for general users for now. “The full power of 5G spectrum can be felt when the government expands the spectrum,” Gopal Vittal, MD and Chief Executive Officer of Bharti Airtel said.
“When we do launch 5G to customers, it must have the full power of spectrum. We would need more spectrums in 3.5 Ghz band,” Vittal further added in reply to a question.
“We believe India has the potential to become a global hub for 5G innovation. To make that happen, we need the ecosystem to come together – applications, devices and network innovation. We are more than ready to do our bit,” said Vittal.
