Ghaziabad (SunstarTV bureau): In a tragic incident, at least 25 people killed and 20 others were injured after the roof of a cemetery collapsed in Muradanagar area in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has conducted the rescue operation and rescued trapped people as well as extracted the bodies of the deceased.
According to Ghaziabad Superintendent of Police Abhishek Verma, the incident caught the site in the morning when around 50 people, who came for the last rites of a fruit-seller, took shelter under the roof of a recently built corridor to save themselves from getting drenched. However, the roof of the structure collapsed minutes later.
An FIR has been lodged against the contractor Ajay Tyagi, engineer Niharika Singh, junior engineer Chandra Pal, supervisor Ashish, and an another official of the corporation who has involved in the construction.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath has directed an investigation into the concerned matter, under the supervision of Meerut Divisional Commissioner and Inspector general of police. Following them the officials of Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) and Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) are also assisting.
An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh has been announced by the state government for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured people, sources added.
