only add colour and flavors but also enrich nutritional benefits of your food.
"Many herbs show promising effects for prevention and fighting of diseases,"
explained Christen Cooper, EdD, RDN, founding director, Coordinated MS in
Nutrition and Dietetics, College of Health Professions, Pace University,
Pleasantville, NY, in an exclusive interview with MDLinx. "
Here is the list of some herbs that we use in our daily life but are unaware of the
medicinal value they possess.
PEPPERMINT:
Peppermint is an aromatic plant, it’s leaves can be used in tea both fresh andwilted. We can use its oil for tinctures, chest rubs, and creams. It also have cooling effect that aids treatment of flatulence, menstrual pains, diarrhea , nausea,
depression, anxiety, muscle and nerve pain, the common cold, indigestion, and
IBS.
OREGANO:
Oregano not only makes your pizzas taste good but also it’s rich antioxidant
character helps in fight against bacteria. Some laboratory studies have shown that
oregano and its components may fight in growth of cancer cells.
BASIL:
Every part of basil plant is recommended for treating different condition of the
human body , from the leaves to the seed, holy basil is considered a tonic. Its fresh
flowers are used for bronchitis , leaves and seeds with black pepper are used for
treating malaria, even the whole plant is used for many diseases like diarrhea,
nausea , vomiting. Its pill or ointment is also used for skin problems like eczema.
LEAMONGRASS:
Lemongrass has a cooling energy which helps to soothe your stomach and keeps
your digestive functions in check. It contains a component called citric that helps
in digestion. It helps in removal of toxins from the body by relieving fluid
retention. It is rich in potassium which increases the production of urine in our
body, which in turn stimulates blood circulation and helps lower blood pressure.
Lemongrass is a great source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C which are essential
nutrients for beautiful skin and hair.
TURMARIC:
Turmeric dramatically increases the antioxidant capacity of the body as oxidative
damage is believed to be one of the mechanisms behind aging and many diseases.
It helps your body fight foreign invaders and also has a role in repairing damage. It
has been studied as a beneficial herb in cancer treatment and been found to affect
cancer growth, development and spread at the molecular level.
The herbs we ignore blatantly without knowing it’s worth, now can help you lead
a healthy lifestyle.
