Yangon (SunstarTV Bureau): Days after the military seized power in a coup, the official of Facebook on Thursday said some of its services were being restricted in Myanmar, according to AFP reports.

However, Facebook owned app Instagram and messaging services WhatsApp and messenger have also been restricted in the country.

The social media restrictions come after Myanmar’s military launched a coup on Monday after Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party won the general elections in November.

One Facebook company spokesperson said, “We are aware that access to Facebook is currently disrupted for some people. We urged authorities to restore connectivity so that people in Myanmar can communicate with their families and friends and access important information.”

The social media platform is wildly popular in Myanmar and the primary method for communication. It is also frequently used by government ministries to issue statements.
