Berhampur (SunstarTV Bureau): Relief for the visually challenged higher secondary students in Odisha as the Braille Press in Berhampur has started production of textbooks, informed sources.
As the State government has prescribed the higher secondary Arts stream books, the printing facility is expected to complete the printing of Literature, English, History and Political Science books by the end of February this year.
According to the Manger of Braille press, Prakash Narayan Rath, the press has been decided to launch textbooks on four subjects for the visually impaired plus-2 students which are expected to complete the production of all books by February end.
Notably, the Braille books are available for class 1 to class 10 students, while the higher secondary students were forced to cover their syllabus by hearing tape records. Besides, the Braille books production became difficult for state as it has only one Braille textbooks production house in Berhampur.
In October 2019, the department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) has set up computerised Braille machines at the press. Further, the government reportedly has made a uniform syllabus for all varsities now. The German-manufactured machine which was procured at a cost of Rs 1.18 crore, has a capacity of printing 16 characters per second.
