America (SunstarTV Bureau): Amidst threat perception to the event by federal agencies, the US President Donald Trump on Monday has declared a state of emergency in Washington DC ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, said reports.
The emergency in Washington DC will be effective from Monday till January 24.
The declaration made after riots broke out at the US Capitol where Trump supporters wrecked havoc on January 6. The fatalities caused over five people, including a Capitol police officer as a result of the chaos.
According to White house statement, “President Donald J Trump declared that an emergency exists in the District of Columbia and ordered Federal assistance to supplement the district’s response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from the 59th Presidential Inauguration from January 24, 2021.”
The White House further said that the President’s action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate relief efforts to alleviate the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population.
Specifically, the FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, limited to direct Federal assistance, will be provided at 100 per cent Federal funding, the White House said.
