Bhubaneswar (SunstarTV Bureau): The Regional Meteorological Department on Saturday issued warning of rainfall alert to Odisha from May 24 as a cyclonic system over south-east and adjoining Bay of Bengal is likely to trigger a low pressure area over east-central and north Andman sea.

However, the direction suggested as it turned in north-west ward which further to intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 24, said HR Biswas, Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre.

“The low pressure area formed over the central Bay of Bengal is likely to move north-west ward and would intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 24. It is likely to hit the coast between Odisha and West Bengal by the morning of May 26,” Biswas said.

Under its impact, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur in most parts of coastal and central Odisha. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in most of the places in the State after May 25, he pointed out. The rainfall intensity is likely to go up further in next few days with intensification of the system.

The fishermen have been advised to remain away from venturing into the deep Central Bay of Bengal between May 23 and 25.

Similarly, they have been warned against fishing activities in North Bay of Bengal and near Odisha coast between May 25 and 27 as the sea condition would remain very rough during the period.

Meanwhile, Odisha Government has geared up to tackle the possible calamity by directing all the Collectors especially of the coastal districts to remain in readiness to address the situation.

A review meeting chaired by chief secretary Suresh Mohapatra was held in presence of Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Jena, Police DG Abhay, Odisha Fire Services DG and top officers of Disaster Management Department on Friday.

All the coastal districts from Ganjam to Balasore have been put on alert. The authorities of these districts have also been directed to stay prepared to launch evacuation drive and post-cyclone relief and rescue operation.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is also scheduled to review the prepardness over the IMD predicition of possible cyclone.
