Bhubaneswar (SunstarTV Bureau): After 22 years of the sensational and high-profile Anjana Mishra gang rape case’s prime accused Biban Biswal arrested by police from Pune, in Maharashtra, on Monday.
The confirmation has made by the Commissioner of Police, Sudhansu Sarangi during a press conference in Bhubaneswar.
According to Sarangi, Biban had disguised himself as Jalandhar Swain and was working as a plumber in Pune. He had hid himself at Aamby Valley in Pune.
The Crime Branch of India (CBI) was been apprised by the development for an investigation in the case.
“We had launched an operation called- ‘Silent Viper’ to nab Biswal. We have succeeded in our plan what the CBI could not do. His arrest is a remarkable achievement for Odisha police,” Sarangi added.
According to matter, on January 9, 1999, the prime accused along with his friends had allegedly gang-raped the 29-year Anjana Mishra inside her car on Bhubaneswar-Barang road while she was travelling to Bhubaneswar along with her friend.
Meanwhile, two had been arrested barely 17 days after the incident where the duo were convicted by District and Sessions Judge of Khurda and was sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the prime accused was absconding since after.
The incident had a significant political repercussion in Odisha. Congress strongman and the then Chief Minister JB Patnaik and his friend former advocate General Indrajit Ray were accused of having played a role in the case. The incident created such a furor in political spectrum that Patnaik had to resign from the post of Chief Minister and Giridhar Gamang took over the reins from him.
